ABOUT THE TRIP
It seems like almost every time we encounter a goliath grouper it makes for a memorable story. I guess they are just naturally inspiring. The truth is that they are impressive fish and their antics make great stories.

It was winter and cold, at least by west-central Florida standards. The wind blew the fifty-something degree air around endlessly. On a good day, the wind was blowing 10 – 15 miles per hour, but on most days it was much worse.

Sometimes the weather is perfect, and this was one of those days. We had experienced clients looking for enough fish to feed their families, and the trip looked promising from the start. After a relatively short trip (30 minutes or so) to our spot where the fish had been congregating lately, we anchored up, threw some chum in the water and dropped the baits down.

It was a bright and shiny day. The water was flat and life was good. The trip started like so many others; everyone showed up at the dock at the appointed time and the boat was running smoothly.

A while ago I was out fishing with my brother-in-law and my nephew. They are from the Midwest, so, while saltwater fishing is not new to them, it was something that they do not get to do very often. We were having some success and had two good-sized keeper gags in the box. Even though we had not limited out, we decided that we had enough fresh fish to feed our families for a couple of days.

When you spend as much time on the water as we do, you begin to get the feeling that you know how a day is going to go before the trip starts. Generally, we meet the clients pretty early in the morning and have a chance to get to know them a little bit while we show them around the boat.

A while ago we found ourselves fishing one of our best grouper spots. It was a beautiful day; flat water and a cooling breeze.

Some days it just goes right. As we look forward to American Red Snapper season for 2020, I cannot help but remember opening day of last year’s season. We had a full complement of six experienced boaters on the charter and we were looking forward to a quick start to a successful trip.
